AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 7-15 OF THE CODE
OF ORDINANCES TO AMEND SUBSECTION 706. 6 OF THE
BUILDING CODE OF THE CITY OF WICHITA FALLS, TO
PROHIBIT WOOD SHINGLES AND SHAKES, OTHER THAN
THOSE CLASSIFIED CLASS C OR SPECIAL PURPOSE
ROOFS, ON ALL APARTMENT HOUSES, CONDOMINIUMS AND
TOWNHOUSES OUTSIDE THE FIRE DISTRICT.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOARD OF ALDERMEN OF THE CITY OF
WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, THAT:
SECTION 1. Section 7-15 of the Code of Ordinances is
hereby amended by adding a new subsection (6. 1) which shall
read as follows:
" (6 .1) The first paragraph of Subsection 706. 6 is
hereby amended to read as follows:
'Outside the Fire District, buildings not over three
(3) stories in height and/or nine thousand (9, 000) square
feet (see Subsection 402 . 3 for Allowable Area Increases)
in area and located not less than six (6) feet from the
property line may be roofed with grade-labeled No. 1 or
No. 2 Wood Shingles or Shakes with a minimum butt thickness
of one-half (1/2) inch, securely fastened with rust resistant
nails. Provided, however, that no wood shingles or shakes,
other than those classified Class C or those meeting speci-
fications as special purpose roofs as herein defined, will be
used on any apartment house, condominium or townhouse. '"
SECTION 2 . Section 7-15 of the Code of Ordinances is
hereby amended by adding a new Subsection (6 .2) which shall
read as follows:
" (6. 2) Subsection 706. 6 is hereby amended by adding a new
paragraph at the end thereof to read as follows:
'Special purpose roofs are allowed on apartment houses,
condominiums and townhouses outside the Fire District; such
special purpose roofs shall meet the following specifications:
a Special purpose wood shake) ecial p p po ke and wood shingle roofing
shall conform to grading and application requirements of this
Building Code. In addition, the deck shall be solid, constructed
of a minimum of 5/8 inch plywood with exterior glue or one inch
nominal tongue and grove boards, overlaid with a layer of
approved asbestos felt lapped two inches on the horizontal
and vertical joints. If wood shakes are used, an eighteen
inch wide strip of the same asbestos felt shall be shingled
in between each course of shakes in such manner that no felt
is exposed to the weather below the shake butts. In either
wood shake or wood shingle usage, in lieu of asbestos felt,
an underlayment of 1/2 inch Type X gypsum board may be placed
under the solid deck.
(b) Approved asbestos felt for special purpose roofing
shall weigh not less than twelve pounds per 100 square feet,
be not less than . 022 inch in thicknessanon-bituminous satu-
rated, containing a fire and water retardant binder, and rein-
forced with glass fibers running length-wise of the sheet not
more than 1/4 inch apart. '"
SECTION 3 . Any building already in existence on the
effective date of this ordinance, whose roof covering is in
compliance with the Building Code prior to this amendment,
may continue as a non-conforming use; however, any replace-
ment of roof covering on such a building shall be governed
by Subsection 101. 4, Paragraph (f) of the Building Code.
