Librarian’s report:
Ms. Daly introduced board members to Susan Cooper, the Head of Youth Services. Ms. Cooper outlined the increased
number of programs on offer for children and teens, including the Adulting 101 series covering practical topics for
tweens and teens such as skillet cooking, manners, basic car maintenance, and the ACT prep sessions offered on
Saturdays over the next couple of months.
January
The Winter Reading program has been extended due to popular demand, and staff are happy to announce the
expansion of the monthly Book Club. From February onwards, we’ll be offering ‘Chapter Chat’ at 10am, and ‘Between
the Lines at 6:45pm ‐ ‐ both clubs will still take place in the Conference Room on the first Tuesday of each month. Titles
for February 7 are The Zookeeper’s Wife in ‘Chapter Chat’, and The Girl on the Train in ‘Between the Lines’.
Dr. Kukeli from MSU will be presenting monthly forums under the title of Neighborhood Economics (brochure attached)
January through May of this year.
The library has purchased new software that enables us to produce both a print and an online newsletter (February
edition attached)
Tutors from the Wichita Adult Literacy Council (WALC) have been using library study rooms to meet clients for a number
of years to such an extent that during the past year we dedicated a room for that specific purpose. In 2016, WALC lost a
valued volunteer in Mike Payne, who had worked tirelessly to assist with their two major fundraisers, the annual Book
Fair and annual Spelling Bee. WALC staff have now completed the decoration of the study room in Mike’s honor – the
space has already garnered admiration from onlookers and appreciation from users.
Coming up:
A much‐anticipated Horizon library database upgrade is (hopefully) coming soon. It will allow staff to link accounts and
create family groups for card‐holders. Members of family groups will still have unique barcodes, but will be able to pick
up each other’s holds and see the entire family balance (if any) on one screen – this will also make life easier for staff to
total any monies due and to have a complete overview of such an account.
There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 5:30 pm
Next meeting is February 21, 2017 at 5:00 pm
