Item 2
A proposed ordinance was presented waiving the requirement of Section 24-8
of the Code of Ordinances for a gun and knife show to be held at the Activities
Center.
ORDINANCE NO. 95-83
ORDINANCE WAIVING SECTION 24-8 OF THE CODE OF ORDINANCES FOR GUN AND
KNIFE SHOWS WHICH ARE SPONSORED BY THE WICHITA FALLS CHAPTER OF THE
TEXAS WEAPON COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION AT THE WICHITA FALLS ACTIVITIES
CENTER.
Moved by Councilman Thomas that Ordinance No. 95-83 be passed.
Motion seconded by Councilman Morris.
Councilman Harper stated that he feels the entire ordinance should be looked
at.
Councilman Thomas agreed, stating that he had talked with City Attorney
H.P. Hodge about this today. He has checked with the Activities Center people,
and there are several cities who have an ordinance similar to ours that covers
peddlers, but it does not cover the Activities Center. They have a committee to
look at each show or user.
Mayor Cook requested that the staff look at this ordinance, and bring a
report back to the Council . We could perhaps make it more attractive, but not
too lenient that would cause some events to become uncontrollable.
It was noted that in these cities most of their trade shows were sales
sponsored by local groups.
Councilman Wilson asked Mrs. Thomas if any other gun and knife show had
requested a permit, and she explained that none had. Councilman Thomas further
explained that no one else wants to compete with this group.
The motion for passage of the ordinance was carried by the following vote.
Ayes: Mayor Cook, Councilmen Swift, Thomas, Harper, Wilson, and Morris.
Nays: None (Councilman Boston arrived immediately following the vote. )
