CALL TO ORDER:
Penny Miller called the meeting to order at 1:30 pm. The minutes of March 28th, 2013 were
put before the Board. A motion was made by Ben Filer to approve the minutes and
seconded by John Fritzsch. Minutes were approved by all.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Park Improvement Committee report: Resolution was passed at the City Council
Meeting to approve the committee and at the next City Council meeting they will
appoint members for the committee. Stephen Garner will represent the Park Board.
Discussion on what will be expected of the members of this committee and other
concerns.
2. Friends of the Park organization: Penny Miller is going to get with Barry Levy about
getting information out to the public.
OTHER ITEMS:
John Fritzsch had some concerns about people not wearing helmets while riding
bicycles on the trail. There was a discussion on what, if anything, the Park Board could
do to remind trail users that helmets are a safety issue and recommend they be worn.
DEPARTMENTAL REPORT:
1. The drought is affecting the Parks more and more. We are continuing to put mulch
around the trees and repairing the irrigation systems in preparation.
2. 4B projects continuing now that we have an engineer available from Public Works
doing work on the projects in District 5. The pond is proceeding in Expressway
Village Park off Missile Road.
3. There was a meeting with the Public Works engineer on a bridge to be put in Lions
Park. We have acquired 8 % acres next to Lions Park near Kate Haynes Elementary
School where a bridge or low water crossing is to be put in.
4. No action on City View Park.
5. We have the estimates in for property management to acquire land between Lucy
Park and Wichita Bluff Open Space trail. Hopefully they will proceed as soon as
possible.
6. No action on the trail by the Railroad right of way. It is a wait and see situation.
7. The next site that we will be working on will be the site at Lake Wichita.
8. In Recreation Department we are getting ready for our Summer Programs which
consist of swim lessons, day camps, concerts, swimming pool rental and much more.
9. Parks is in the Summer Maintenance mode. Also the Parks Maintenance Department
has highways within the City.
10. The Parks Department is moving. The US Army Recruiting Center off 9th Street will be
the new location for Parks. We have to put in a new air conditioning and heating
system and playground equipment.
OTHER ITEMS:
The Board had a discussion on trying to get the information out for City Cleanup each
year.
