Library Advisory Board Minutes - 09/16/2014LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES September 16, 2014 MEMBERS PRESENT: Donna lane McGough Kay Story Jean Hall Arthur Bea Williams Jennifer Andrews Kimberley Latham MEMBERS ABSENT: Peggy Browning Carrie Ann Taylor EX- OFFICIO MEMBERS PRESENT: Jack Murphy, Director of Parks & Recreation A quorum was present and the meeting was called to order at 5:05 pm, .Librarian's report: Danielle Marsh has accepted the position of Youth Services Librarian and will be joining the staff next week, September 22. She replaces Tammy Benninger who has returned to Pitkin County library in Colorado to take a fulltime librarian post. We will also be looking to fill a Library Assistant vacancy shortly as Melissa Boerma recently handed in her resignation to take a job at MSU. Interviews are already underway and the posting has attracted over 130 applicants. Summer Reading was extremely successful this year. Reading participation was generally up from last year's figures, with only the youth group showing a very slight decrease (from 202 to 199) in the number of participants. The adult reading prize of a self - contained salad shaker got very positive reviews, as did the teen prize of the pen with USB attachment. 15 paid programs were provided this year, including 6 `doable' shows and 2 additional workshops. The average cost to the library per program was just over $260, and with well over 2800 people attending the performances, it meant a cost of approximately $1.36 per head. The locally produced, free programs included storytime, toddler time, Tales for Tails (therapy dogs), gaming and crafts: these were also extremely popular with over 900 attendees over the 9 -week timeframe. Two programs of note were the 4H Mystery Night production and the Doctor Who family event. The latter was a great success, drawing 75 Whovians from ages 6 to 60 --- it should be noted that staff probably had as much fiat planning this particular program as the audience did who participated? Phase II of the RFID implementation project looks likely to meet council approval and the funds should be in the upcoming new fiscal year's budget. The library plans to purchase an automated materials handling system to accommodate in-house item returns. The system is a conveyor belt with a total of 7 bins located on either side to catch grouped items, This will greatly reduce the number of actions needed to return items to their shelves, reduce material wear and tear, and allow staff time to focus on other aspects of library service. Future Board meetings will most likely focus on updating long range plans and various policies. Next meeting October 21, 2014 There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:55pm. ffl hai Donna Jane McGough, Cr
