Res transit fares 2/13/1946R E S O L U T I 0 N WHEREAS, the public has rightfully demanded an adequate, safe and comfortable transportation system in Wichita Falls, and WHEREAS, the City Council has advised the Wichita Transit Corporation that it will be expected to replace all of the old buses now being operated on the streets of this City by new buses as soon as the same can be pur- chased which are of the size needed for a city of the population of Wichita Falls, and, FNHEREAS, the Transit Corporation has purchased eight new buses of thirty -one passenger capacity at a cost of more than $65,000.00, two of which have been delivered by the factory and put in operation on the streets of Wichita Falls and the remaining six are to be delivered in March of this year, and, BEREAS., an investigation of the receipts of the Transit Corporation show that because of the long bus lines compared to the population, the re- venue is approximately twenty --two cents per mile in Wichita Falls as against a revenue of forty to sixty cents per mile in cities in Texas which are as large as Vfi.chita Falls, and, WIiEREAS, the Bus Drivers, Union voted to strike for substantial in- crease in wages to be paid the drivers by the Transit Corporation which it is claimed to be necessaty to meet the change in living costs, and which shut -down of transportation in the City would cause very heavy loss to the entire City, particularly to persons who use bus transportation in going to and from work both in the City and to Sheppard Field and would cause great hurt to the Public and private school System and the Junior College because the students would not have a means to get to and from school and other losses to the public too numerous to mention. WHEREAS, a tentative agreement has been entered into between the Wichita Transit Corporation and the Bus Drivers' Union to put in effect the increase in the wages to be paid the drivers. NCF , THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF ALDERIAI OF THE CITY OF WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS: • That the.Wichita Transit Corporation is hereby authorized to charge a fare of 10 cents for single fare or six tokens for fifty cents for trans- porting adult passengers on its motor buses and a fare of five cents for children from five to twelve years of age inclusive, and a five cent fare for students in actual attendance upon any academic, public or private schools or Junior College. All children five years of age or less when accompanied by a passenger above five years of age shall be transported free. All such passengers shall be entitled to the usual transfers as now given. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Attorney be directed to prepare an ordinance to be considered by The Board of Aldermen of the City of 7Tichita Falls for changing the fares to bb collected by the Wichita Transit Corpora- tion as above set out, with the understanding, however, that said increase in fares be put into effect only after public hearing has been had on said ordinance and in accordance with all other charter provisions regulating such matters. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Management of the Wichita Transit Corporation be advised to put all routes on regular and definite running schedules and to purchase new buses adequate to meet the needs to give Wichita Falls a first -class transportation system at the earliest possible time. :FASSED AND APPROVED, this the 13th day of February, A.D., 1946. mayor AT City Clerk
