RESOLUTION NO. 1667
RESOLUTION COMMENDING PRESIDENT FORD AND
THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES FOR THE
RECOVERY OF THE MAYAGUEZ AND ITS CREW.
WHEREAS, on May 12th, 1975 a Cambodian gunboat fired
upon and seized an unarmed U. S. merchant ship and its 39
man crew about ninty (90) miles off the coast of Cambodia;
and,
WHEREAS, President Ford instructed the State Depart-
ment to demand the immediate release of the ship and its
crew; and,
WHEREAS, the United States first sought to recover the
ship and crew through diplomacy, and sought the help of the
People' s Republic of China, which has direct contact with
the new Cambodian government; and,
WHEREAS, when the diplomatic efforts failed, President
Ford directed that military measures be immediately taken by
the Marine Corps, the Navy and the Air Force; and,
WHEREAS, this swift, effective action resulted in the
recovery of the ship and the rescue of the crewmen.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF ALDERMEN
OF THE CITY OF WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, THAT:
President Ford is commended for his decisive action in
handling this incident, and the members of the armed forces
who participated in the rescue efforts are commended for their
bravery and effectiveness.
