ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OR THE CITY OF WICHITA
FALLS, TEXAS, AMENDING CHAPTER 22, BUILDINGS AND BUILDING
REGULATIONS, ARTICLE III. ELECTRICITY, DIVISION 4. ELECTRICAL
STANDARDS, SECTION 22-401. NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE;
FINDING AND DETERMINING THAT THE MEETING AT WHICH THIS
ORDINANCE WAS PASSED WAS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AS
REQUIRED BY LAW.
WHEREAS, the Electrical Board of Examiners has determined that an
amendment to the Electrical Standards included in Section 22, Buildings and Building
Regulations of the Wichita Falls Code of Ordinances, is necessary to advance public
purposes relating to the quality of life, appearance and function of the City; and
WHEREAS, the Electrical Board of Examiners recommends the adoption of an
exception to the requirements governing Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection; and
WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Wichita Falls concurs with the
recommendations included herein.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, THAT:
SECTION 1. Chapter 22, Buildings and Building Regulations, Article III,
Electricity, Division 4, Electrical Standards, Section 22-401 National Electrical Code, is
hereby amended as follows:
"National Electrical Code, 2002 Edition, Chapter 2 Wiring and Protection, Article
210 Branch Circuits
210.12 Arc-Fault Circuit-Interrupter Protection.
(A) Definition. An arc-fault circuit interrupter is a device intended to provide protection
from the effects of arc faults by recognizing characteristics unique to arcing and by
functioning to de-energize the circuit when an arc fault is detected.
(B) Dwelling Unit Bedrooms. All branch circuits that supply 125-volt, single-phase, 15-
and 20-ampere outlets installed in dwelling unit bedrooms shall be protected by an arc-
fault circuit interrupter listed to provide protection of the entire branch circuit.

(1) ADD-ONS – are defined as additions to an existing residence, duplex or multi-
family dwelling, where article 210.12 shall apply if the panel board has to be changed
out for the new addition.
If an existing panel board is not capable of handling the new ARC-FAULT
breakers and there is room to add additional breakers for the add-on, there shall
be no requirement of this article.
(2) REMODELS—where a bedroom is existing and the owner, or electrical contractor
extends the circuits that already exist or new circuits are added, these rules shall
apply."
SECTION 2. It is hereby officially found and determined that the meeting at
which this ordinance was passed was open to the public as required by law.
