RESOLUTION DECLARING APRIL 10, 1989,
AS A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF THE 10TH
ANNIVERSARY OF THE WICHITA FALLS
TORNADO
WHEREAS, on April 10, 1979, large areas of the city of
Wichita Falls were destroyed by a tornado, resulting in the loss
of 46 lives and over 300 million dollars in property, and
WHEREAS, the vast scope of the tragedy affected each
citizen, whether directly or indirectly, and brought the
community together into one neighborhood with genuine caring
feelings for each other, and
WHEREAS, the citizens of Wichita Falls are to be highly
commended that in the midst of their sorrow and losses, their
determination to rebuild their lives prompted aspirations to
increase the livability of their city thus providing the emphasis
for quality growth, and
WHEREAS, on Sunday the 9th day of April, 1989, the day prior
to the 10th anniversary of the Wichita Falls tornado, all
churches are encouraged to pause and reflect upon the anniversary
of this event, and
WHEREAS, as we remember the occurrence of the storm, it is
equally important to remember the Spirit of Recovery, and the
linking of neighborhoods throughout the city in love, help, and
support of each other,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF
WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, THAT:
April 10, 1989, be set aside as a Day of Remembrance of the
Wichita Falls Tornado and that our memories of the past include
the faith and deter - mination that guided our city's progress in
the last decade and let us further resolve that the same spirit
will continue to be the enthusiastic, motivating force for our
future.
