Res 040-94 3/16/1994RESOLUTION NO. - /%- 51 T RESOLUTION TO AUTHORIZE THE CITY MANAGER TO MAKE APPLICATION TO THE TEXAS COMMISSION ON ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE FOR CONTINUATION AND EXPANSION OF THE D.A.R.E. PROGRAM WHEREAS, The Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse makes funding available through grants to cities for D.A.R.E. programs in the schools. Currently the city of Wichita Falls is receiving grant funds from the state to provide one DARE officer in the school. However, this is the final year of that Grant which will end in September 1994 . The city is also funding an additional DARE officer on its own for a total of two officers assigned to the DARE program. WHEREAS, this new grant proposal attempts to broaden the scope of the DARE program by extending it into the Seventh grade as well as the Fifth grade. It will include counseling, specialized services, and provides for some summer programs to be implemented. It would provide complete funding for three DARE officers, counselors, some teacher time, part-time secretarial help, and necessary supplies. This grant request asks for federal funds in the amount of $402, 796 and provides for $100, 000 in matching funds which will be provided by the school district and donations. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS: WHEREAS, if the grant is approved a subcontract with the Wichita Falls Independent School system will be required prior to implementation of this proposed program. Also, if the grant is approved a new resolution will be drawn to obtain counsel approval to accept these funds and implement the program.
