MEMBERS ABSENT:
The meeting was called to order at 4:20 P.M. by Dr. Snowden. Ms. Hughes introduced Mr.
Richard Maruscsak, Librarian II, Technical Services Manager. Mr. Mamscsak explained the duties of his
department to the Board as part of the newly reinstated Meet the Staff agenda item. Members were able to
question Mr. Maruscsak about the cataloging and processing of an item to make it shelf ready and received
a quick look at how future technology will impact this area of Library operations.
Following Mr. Maruscsak's presentation, Dr. Snowden announced that a quorum was present. The
minutes of the September meeting were approved as submitted.
He then called on Ms. Hughes for the Librarian's report. She said that use is up considerably from
last year. Circulation has increased 7440, Reference Questions has increased by 1625, Teacher Collections
by 1036, and tours by 114. 1561 additional persons entered the library over the September 1997, count and
486 more children attended story time. 190 registered borrowers used the computer laboratory. Ms. Hughes
reported that Board Member Andrea Williams, and staff members Becky Morrison, Jeannine Humphris,
and she were working on a joint celebration of National Library Week (April 11 -17, 1999). This is the first
of what is hoped to be numerous cooperative efforts between MSU's Moffat Library and the City's public
library. They have met with Dr. Ludwig Otto, a professional grant writer from North Texas Regional
Library System, and will be firming up plans for programs of multicultural interest including speakers, a
film discussion series, photo contest, essay contest and an evening of music.
Dr. Snowden opened the discussion of the requested revisions of the June 23 minutes. Councilman
Altman suggested that the term "demanded" be changed to "requested" and the rest of the minutes stand as
printed. The Board voted to change the wording as per Councilman Altman's suggestion. The minutes
were to be refiled with those changes.
Dr. Snowden introduced Tommy Pipes, former Board Member and the new President of the
Friends of the Library and Board liaison. He announced the new officers of the Friends and spoke about the
book discussion group that the Friends intend to form. He felt that the large turn out at the meeting
indicated an interest in such a group. Plans for the discussion group will continue after the holidays. He
said that the Book Sale Room is doing very well, but needs more volunteers so it can be open more hours.
Ms. Hughes said that McNaughton, the Library's lease book vendor had donated 632 recent releases for
sale in the book store. These were all titles the Library already had in its collection. Ms. Hughes also
announced a workshop to be presented by Dr. Ludwig Otto for the North Texas Regional Library System
which will deal with operating Friends groups and creating Library Foundations. She invited all Board
Members and interested parties to attend. Councilman Shine has been interested in a Library Foundation
for some time and has spoken with Ms. Hughes about investigating the possibilities of such a foundation.
Dr. Snowden announced the next meeting would be a combined December - November meeting
because of the holidays and would be the 8t' of December, 1998, at 4:15 in the Library Conference Room.
The meeting was adjourned at 5:05 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
