INTRODUCTION AND PRESENTATION BY STAFF AND COMMISSION TO AUDIENCE Mr. Van Essen asked everyone to introduce themselves. Mr. Newsom gave a brief introduction thanking everyone for coming and explaining why it would be beneficial to expand the historic district. Mr. Van Essen gave additional reasons for the expansion and reviewed the process the Commission used for choosing the specific area. III. OPEN DISCUSSION WITH PROPERTY OWNERS The Commission set aside this portion of the meeting to answer questions from the audience. Many members of the audience had questions concerning restrictions and the design review process. Mr. Van Essen reviewed the design review section of the ordinance, including the guidelines the Commission must follow when analyzing an application. Several audience members asked about the benefits of a historic district and if anyone had examples of successful downtown revitalization accomplished with historic preservation. Ms. Koch and Mr. Clark listed approximately 10 cities of varying size that have been very successful using preservation. Mr. Clark reiterated that the intent of consideration of historic district expansion was to further assist downtown development. He noted that much of the progress that has been accomplished downtown has been based on historic preservation approaches. He further encouraged the downtown owners to work actively on increasing the effectiveness of a downtown association. IV. ADJOURN The Commission and staff thanked the audience for attending and insured them of the importance of their comments.
