Flu Vaccine Update Lori Morrow, R.N., Communicable Disease Supv. Lori Morrow reported that on October 5, 2004, one of two flu vaccine manufactures, Chiron had informed the CDC that none of its 48 million doses of vaccine would be available for distribution in the U.S. for the 2004 -2005 season. This was due to their license being suspended in the Liverpool facility for 3 months. This action reduced Page 1 of 3 the expected supply of flu vaccine in the U. S. by half. Aventis Pasteur produced 55.4 million doses for this season. Prior to Chiron's announcement approximately 33 million doses had already been shipped to various health care providers. They are working with the CDC to distribute the remaining 22.4 million unshipped doses in 2 phases to specific high -risk individuals. She detailed both the CDC and the TX Department of State Health Services plan for distribution. Part of TX DSHS plan was to determine how many doses each county had received and how many were still needed. Wichita County had received 7590 doses and was requesting an additional 14,000 doses. The WFWCPHD had received 1500 of the 3000 doses ordered. They would begin taking appointments on 10/25/2004. A phone bank has been set up to take appointments. All calls will be screened to ensure on clients that meet CDC will be given appointments. V. SPAN Grant Lou Franklin, R.N., Assistant Director of Health The SPAN (School Physical and Nutrition Survey) grant, administered by the University of Texas School of Public Health, is a one -time award of $26, 659. A similar project was done statewide in Public Health Regions of Texas in 2001. Wichita County was not included in that project. The Health District will be working with school districts within Wichita County to perform surveys on 4th, 8th and 11th grade students. The student will fill out a survey on dietary intake and have their height and weight measured by a Public Health Nurse. This project will provide Wichita County with statistics on childhood obesity rates in Wichita County as well as identify nutritional habits among school age children. Currently there is not any information on obesity rates in children in Wichita County. The findings should help identify areas of educational need. We hope to use this information in the future to apply for additional grants. VI. Smart Board /Polycom Amy Cone, PH Emergency Response Coordinator The Health District's Parker Conference Room now has equipment to facilitate training and education for the Health District staff and others. The demonstration included use of the Polyvision Walk and Talk Interactive Whiteboard, which provides a writeable mounted surface for the projection of presentations and other electronic data. The whiteboard is linked to a laptop with wireless Internet service that is linked to a ceiling- mounted projector. The writing surface on the whiteboard allows the user to highlight, write on, erase and circle displayed text while user at the laptop, or multiple laptops, receives the modified data. The Polycom video teleconferencing system was also utilized in conjunction with the Zenith plasma television to show how instantaneous transmission occurs between units as close as within the Health District to around the world. This system is used for staff to "attend" live training while remaining here. The unit uses dual bandwidth to transmit and receive voice and visual data.
