Arts Commission Minutes - 09/30/1980 MINUTES OF WICHITA FALLS 'ARTS COMMISSION SPECIAL SESSION September 30 , 1980 The Wichita Falls Arts Commission met in special session at noon on September 30 , 1980 , at the Activities Center. The purpose of the meeting was to review a report from the Grant Application Screening Committee. Chairman Jerry Estes called the meeting to order and Pat Jones moved that the minutes of September 15 , 1980 , be approved as printed and mailed. The motion was seconded and passed. Mr. Estes ,-.-Chairman of the Centennial Project Committee;- rpor€:edthat-a letter from the National Endowment tTie Arts_ had been received with instructions to proceed-- in____ filing an applicationg-h for matchinnds of $50,00�_ to be --pcZ 7 _ marked January 15 ,_-1981. At -present, -s-Io;000 - is earmarked from - Fie Commission's 197S=BD budget for a sculpture designating the Wichita Falls Centennial in 1982 . Also, the Commission is considering adding $20 ,000 to earmarked funds from 1980-81 budget. Mr. Estes informed the Commission that a $50 ,000 budget has been allotted to the Commission for the 1980-81 fiscal year. The Grant Application Screening Committee, consisting of Chairman Dr. Jennie Louise Hindman, Helen Henry and Saundra Heffington recommended the following grants: The Civic Chorus of Greater Wichita Falls Area, Inc . -- $2 ,000 for conducting by Jane Marshall at Spring Concert; Distinguished Artists Concerts , Inc. -- $2,000 for the presentation of the 1980-81 concert series; Midtown Fine Arts League -- $2 ,000 for art exhibit; Wichita County Heritage Society -- $7 , 500 for a historical and architec- tural survey of Wichita Falls ; Wichita Falls Art Association -- $2 ,500 • for a competitive art showing entitled "Works in Clay" ; YWCA Children's Theatre -- $1,200 for portable equipment. Funding requests not recommended: Backdoor Theatre -- $7 ,490 for lighting and sound equipment for dinner theatre; Red River Lyric Theatre -- $7 ,500 for the establishment of a summer musical theatre; KIDZ Educational TV -- $7 ,500 for equip- ment; New Song Concerts, Inc. -- $5 ,687 for a Christian Music Festival. The Screening Committee 's grant recommendations for the September deadline of the 1980-81 budget total $17 , 200 with $12 ,800 being held in reserve for the February 1st deadline. Troy Jensen moved that the Commission receive the Screening Committee 's report for consideration. The motion was seconded and passed. -2- Polly Cox moved that the Commission meet October 14 instead of October 21 to finalize voting on grant applications. The motion was seconded and passed .
