THE WICHITA FALLS ARTS COMMISSION
(May 20, 1980 )
The Wichita Falls Arts Commission held its monthly
meeting at noon on May 20, 1980, at the Activities Center.
The following people were in attendance:
Helen Henry - Civic Chorus
Dorcas Chapman - At large
Don Burkman - Auditorium Manager
Jerry Estes - Symphony
Dr. Jennie Louise Hindman - At large
Gwendolyn Jackson - At large
David Murray - At large
Polly Cox - Wichita Falls Art Association

Chairman Jerry Estes called the meeting to order
and the previous minutes were approved as printed and
mailed. Mr . Estes announced that the next meeting would be
June 17, 1980, at the Activities Center .
Mr . Estes announced that all members of the
Commission whose terms were expiring had been reappointed.
Mr. Estes also announced that a grant writing workshop will
be conducted by Texas Commission for the arts on June 5 ,
10 : 00 A.M. , at North Texas Federal Gallery. Commission mem-
bers were encouraged to make this announcement to their rep-
resented groups .
Gwendolyn Jackson reported to the Commission that
the Midtown Fine Arts League is presently working to gain
tax exempt status.
Dr . Don Maxwell moved that the Commission commend
Mrs. Delores Jones for her fine work in organizing the
Wichita Falls Week of Music. The motion was seconded and
passed.

Mr . Estes, Chairman of the Centennial Project
Committee reported to the Commission and discussion fol-
lowed. The Project Committee ' s proposal consists of the
erection of an art form to be placed in a public location in
Wichita Falls signifying the City' s Centennial Year with the
following criteria being imposed:
1 . It must be visually appealing;
2. The location should be accessible to the public;
3. It must be functional in nature; and
4. It must be lasting and low maintenance in char-
acter .
The Project Committee recommended that Bellevue Park be con-
sidered as a choice location contingent upon the park being
upgraded as a place of beauty to compliment the proposed art
form. Following discussion, Bob Arnold moved that the Arts
Commission endorse the proposal of the Centennial Project
Committee. The motion was seconded and passed.
Mr . Estes suggested that the Wichita Falls
Centennial Commission be asked to join forces with the Arts
Commission to plan the Centennial Project. Following dis-
cussion, Mrs. Jackson moved that Mr. Estes be authorized to
ask the WFCC to join the Arts Commission in the Centennial
Arts Project endeavor. The motion was seconded and passed.
Mr . Estes pointed out to the Commission that a
partial grant for the Centennial Project is possible through
the National Endowment for the arts and that the deadline
for a letter of intent is June 30, 1980.
Dr. Jennie Louise Hindman, Chairwoman of the
Screening Committee, reported an application has been re-
ceived from New Song Concerts, Inc. , requesting $5 , 687 . 00
for a Christian Music Festival.
The meeting was adjourned at 1 : 45 P.M.
