Arts Commission Minutes - 10/19/1978 MINUTES OF WICHITA FALLS ARTS COMMISSION OCTOBER 19 , 1978 The Wichita Falls Arts Commission held its monthly meeting on October 17, 1978, at the North Texas Savings and Loan Gallery at 12 Noon. The following people were in attendance: NAME AND REPRESENTATION Don Burkman - Memorial Auditorium Mary H. Wolverton - Museum Dorcas Chapman - At-Large Madge Francis Muehlberger - At-Large Gwen Jackson - At-Large Larry Francell - Museum Don Lyles - JROTC - WFISD Carolyn Sanders - Wichita Falls Ballet Theatre Don Maxwell - Midwestern State University Pat Jones - Heritage Society Polly Cox - Wichita Falls Art Association Stephen J. Ondrejas - Planning Division Mark Wittlinger - Backdoor Theatre Harold Bonham - At-Large Jerry Estes - Symphony Saundra Heffington - At-Large Saundra Heffington, Chairman called the meeting together at 12:10 p.m. She asked for any corrections to the last meeting's minutes. These minutes stood without correction. She announced that the next meeting would be held at the same location and time on Tuesday, November 21, 1978. Mary Wolverton gave a report from the Museum and Art Center. She stated that the Museum and Art Center has had an arrangement with the City of Wichita Falls that presently helps underwrite the Museum's costs. She asked that the Arts Council endorse this concept and recommend its continutation. Jerry Estes asked to speak to the question. He made the following motion which will read as follows: "That the Wichita Falls Arts Commission endorse the contract between the Wichita Falls Museum and Art Center and the City of Wichita Falls whereby the Museum receives an allocation of funds from the City in its annual budget." Mark Wittlinger seconded the motion. The motion carried unanimously. Chairman Heffington then opened the meeting to discussion concerning application for funds. Don Maxwell first spoke concerning Midwestern opera workshop production of Hansel and Gretel. Dorcas Chapman asked Mr. Maxwell to bring additional information about his project. Colonel Don Lyles next presented his application for costumes for a Six Flags Over Texas Color Guard . There was no representative from the Midwestern State University's Speech and Drama nor Music Departments and Chairman Heffington asked that these be discussed at the November meeting. It was decided that the Midwestern State Music Department application, Distinguished Artist Series, be charged under the sponsorship of the Pianists Performance Council. Mark Wittlinger, representing Backdoor Theatre, discussed the application from his organization. Carolyn Sanders, representing the Ballet Theatre, presented their application. There was no representative from the Civic Chorus, but this application was discussed,with Mrs. C. E. Jackson supplying much of the information about this application. Stephen Ondrejas suggested that the Council seriously consider a major art acquisition for the City such as a statue to be exhibited on a permanent basis. Matching funds could be used to make this purchase possible. No action was taken on this suggestion. Dr. Jennie Louise Hindeman raised the question of proxies. She moved that the commission request that each agency recommend an alternate with voting privileges to the City Council for appointment. The motion carried unanimously.
