CALL TO ORDER /- /�-,j Commission Members City Staff The meeting was called to order at 10:00 a.m. by Commissioner Penny Miller. She acknowledged former Chairman Floyd Thornton's service on the Commission. His term expired after the Commission's last meeting, so there had been no opportunity to publicly thank him for his conscientious attention to duties. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES (NOVEMBER 20, 2009) The minutes were approved without correction. 3. ELECTION OF CHAIR AND VICE CHAIR David Tate nominated Commissioner Miller to serve as Chair of the Commission. Seconded by Carol DuBray, the motion carried. Commissioner DuBray then nominated Commissioner Tate to serve as Vice - Chair. REPORT FROM FIRE CHIEF Chief Foster thanked the Commissioners for their service, and welcomed the new members. The entrance examination originally scheduled for this Saturday has been postponed, due to the possibility of inclement weather. Civil Service Director Tammy Guerra is notifying the applicants of the postponement. There are five vacancies at the Fire Department. He acknowledged the upcoming retirement of Training Battalion Chief Roger Ritchie. Chief Ritchie, who was in attendance at the meeting, is retiring February 12 after 35 years of service. 5. REPORT FROM POLICE CHIEF Chief Bachman also welcomed the new Commissioners, adding that it was nice to see people willing to serve in this very important position. The Commissioners, upon reviewing the promotional examination appeals, virtually have officers' careers in their hands. Testing for the new Academy was held several months ago. They are in the process of conducting background investigations on the remaining applicants. The Department currently has five vacancies. Two officers are on military leave; one is due back in another month or so. He had originally contemplated holding another Academy mid -year, but believes it would be better to wait until there are six to eight vacancies. 6.
