Library Advisory Board Minutes - 09/22/2009MMARY ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES September 22, 2009 MEMBERS PRESENT: Stephen Dodge Jennifer Andrews Amy Bobrowitz Jean Hall Jeff Tillman Carrie Ann Taylor EX- OFFICIO MEMBERS PRESENT: Jack Murphy, Director of Parks & Recreation Lesley Daly, Library Administrator MEMBERS ABSENT: Teresa Wilcox Cari Beesinger -Guidry Steven Young A quorum was present and the meeting was called to order at 4:20 pm. Ms. Daly briefly outlined the purpose of the Library Advisory Board and its role within the city. She asked for a voluntary Chair for this year, stressing that this is also required information that will be submitted to the Texas State Library and to the regional library system, North Texas Library Partners, inc. Amy Bobrowitz agreed to act as Chairperson for this year and also volunteered to serve as the Library's lay representative for system voting purposes. Librarian's report: Ms. Daly shared Summer Reading statistics with the Board, noting that participation in general was up this year compared to 2008. She also distributed copies of powerpoint slides (attached) that illustrate door count totals and circulation transaction totals. Library usage in 2009 remains at record levels and still mirrors past patterns very closely. Staff: The library did lose 2 staff members during the course of the summer who have not yet been replaced: a Library Page and a Librarian II (Head of Youth Services). However, a new Librarian I, Allison Steger was hired in June to work in the Youth department, and to date she has proven to be an excellent choice. She joined the staff at the very beginning of the Summer Reading program, and jumped in to everything with infectious enthusiasm and efficiency. New Business: Jack Murphy expounded on the recent City Council decision to reduce the library operating hours and to also lay off two more employees, noting that all city departments have undergone budget cuts for the upcoming fiscal year. More details should be forthcoming at next month's meeting. New operating hours will not come into effect until Saturday, November 28 and will cut the library's total hours open to the public from 63 to 53. Mon -Wed hours will be unchanged, library will close at 5:OOpm to the public on Thurs & Fri, and will open from 10 -2 on Saturdays. Next meeting: The next meeting will be Tuesday, October 27 at 4:15pm.
