Dr. Sernoe called the meeting to order at 4:17 P.M. A quorum was present. The minutes of the
October 26, 2004 meeting were approved as submitted. Councilor Williams administered the Oath of
Office to new Board Members Melinda Brinkley, Nell Lister, Alison Reynolds, and Alexis Terrell.
Ms. Hughes introduced Robert Seabury and Bill McGregor, who made a presentation to the Board about
the possibility of establishing a branch library in the building on Cedar Elm, formerly occupied by Grace
Church. Mr. Seabury showed pictures of the property and said that he thought donations could be raised
to purchase the property for the City, and that little renovation would be necessary to create a branch
library with multiple meeting rooms for a community center or co- occupancy by another entity. He and
Mr. McGregor offered to take the Board through the property. The Board agreed to tour the facility on
December 16 at noon.
During the Librarian's Report, Ms. Hughes said that the creation of the Teen Zone was mostly
completed. The Library was closed for two days while the adult collection was shifted, stacks were
moved, new signage created, the work areas of the Circulation Desk reconfigured, and the Teen and
Spanish language collections were pulled together. Loan Star Libraries money and NTRLS money will be
used to purchase some less formal furniture for the Teen area.
Discussion then turned to the One Book, One Community project. Ms. Hughes said the
Executive Committee met and would meet again on Jan 20. All Board Members are invited. Councilor
Williams and Dee Decker discussed the funds that would need to be raised to support the project. They
requested that all committees have their proposed needs and wish lists in as soon as possible so that a
preliminary budget and a target figure for the fund - raising campaign can be developed. Ms. Hughes
agreed to ask Mansfield for a copy of their budget and gave Ms. Williams a copy of the Arlington
proposed OBOC budget, exclusive of the Friends and Library Foundation expenditures. Ms Jones said that
the book had been selected and she would pursue contacting the author; she said that she should be able to
have that figure to Councilor Williams by the second week in January. She will also contact Hastings and
Books A Million as possible co- sponsors for the author event. Councilor Williams said she would also
need an estimate of how much media advertising would need to be purchased in addition to the traditional
public service advertising. She will also need an idea of how many copies of the books will need to be
purchased and what the cost will be, using the Library's vendor discounts.
The Friends bookstore will be offering half -priced Saturdays every weekend in December to
reduce their back stock and make up for the two holiday weekends.
The Board will meet on January 25, 2005 at 4:15 in the Library Conference Room. Dr. Sernoe
adjourned the meeting at 5:20 PM.
