Ms. Williams called the meeting to order at 4:17 P.M. A quorum was present. The minutes of the
March 26, 2005 meeting were approved as submitted.
Ms. Daly introduced the Council of Advisory Teens liaison. She reported on the activities of
CAT to date and outlined some of the future plans to encourage young adult participation in the library.
CAT has members from all of the local high schools and junior high schools.
Ms. Hughes reported that the City budget cycle has begun. The Library will request that
professional salaries be brought in line with the State average salaries to make attracting and keeping
quality librarians easier. Currently Librarian vacancies may take from six months to one year to fill. The
Librarians are putting together a three -year long -range plan of library target services to satisfy a state
requirement for continued system membership. Ms. Hughes will bring the plan proposal to the next Board
meeting for discussion and approval.
Discussion then turned to the One Book, One Community project. Ms. Williams explained that
after meeting with the fundraisers for the project, the OBOC Executive Committee decided to move the first
annual event to April 2006 to coincide with National Library Week. This time line will allow the
fundraisers time to submit grant proposals to local foundations to fund an author visit and cover some of the
advertising needs to make the event a success.
Ms Hughes reminded the Library Board that it was past time for the Board to review the Library
Policy Manual. She recommended handing out copies of the manual in September for the Board to review
and ask questions. At the December meeting the Board could approve the policies as amended.
The Friends purchased shirts for the three staff members who recently finished their probationary
period, provided prizes for the annual bookmark contest for National Library Week, and are paying tuition
for Lesley Daly to attend the TALL Texans Leadership Institute in June. The Friends plan to help pay for
some furnishings for the Teen Zone and to provide prizes for the summer reading clubs. Bookstore sales
continue healthy, especially on half price Saturdays.
The Board will meet next on May 24, 2005 at 4:15 in the Library Conference Room. Ms.
Williams adjourned the meeting at 5:07 PM.
