IV. Flu Vaccines: Lou Franklin
Ms. Franklin gave a report of the status of the flu vaccine for this season. She stated
that of the 3000 doses ordered, we have given 2,620 to date. We also received 394
doses of children's flu vaccine. There has not been a screening procedure this year.
Everyone requesting a flu shot received one.
V. Span Grant — Lou Franklin
SPAN is the School Physical Activity and Nutrition Project to monitor the prevalence of
overweight/obesity in school -aged children in Texas. In addition, SPAN identifies
factors in Texas students that may underlie obesity. The Project was conducted by
researchers at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston and funded
by the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Centers for Disease
Control and prevention.
The results are a snapshot of the 4th, 8th, and 11th grade population in Wichita County,
in the state of Texas during the 2004 -2005 academic school year. Some questions in
the survey ask the students questions about 'yesterday'. These questions cannot
provide information about 'typical' individual behaviors, since it is only one day of data.
City View ISD, Iowa Park ISD, and Wichita Falls ISD participated in the study with
approximately 1,505 responding.
Mrs. Franklin stated that what is discussed today is raw data. A more comprehensive
study will be available when the study is complete so it can be determined how
Wichita County compares to other areas of the State.
VI. Recognition of Board Members — Lou Franklin
Mrs. Franklin presented a plaque to Mr. Greg Stockton for six years of outstanding
service to the Board of Health. He has been a vital contributing factor to the Board
and his presence will be missed.
VI. Next Meeting Date:
The next meeting will be held on February 24, 2006.
VII. Adjourn:
It was moved by Lauren Jensen and seconded by Larry Rains that the meeting be
adjourned. The motion carried and the meeting was adjourned at 1:10 p.m.
