Smith presented the accident statistics. Lt. Smith explained how to read the charts of statistics and their impact on the overall safety of the city. The statistics are indicators for the motor unit to concentrate their efforts in the areas of town where the accidents are occurring. City Traffic Report Chairman Mark Beauchamp advised the commission that the project at West Foundation School has been completed. Stripping was installed as well as signs to direct traffic. It has improved the flow of traffic. His department is now undertaking a complete sign change out in Eastside. The proposed speed limit changes.have also been completed. Now the priority is to erect signs for Martin Luther King Blvd. There are approximately 85 locations that will need the signs. One commission member questioned leaning signs being replaced. Mr. Beauchamp reported that missing or leaning signs are given a high priority. They are always trying to make corrections as they are found. State Traffic Report Mr. Tim Hertel advised that the direct connect project is on schedule. Unfinished Business Item 05 -11: Citizen Complaint Chairman Beauchamp advised that a pedestrian study has now been completed. The only thing that can be done now is upgrade the signs and lighting in the area. There was nothing to warrant any other changes. Item closed. New Business Item 06 -01: Traffic Studies Chairman Beauchamp reported that the traffic studies on Washington St. show very little drop off activity around the school. Based on the study, his recommendation is to remove the one way traffic designation during school hours. Mr. Beauchamp will make the necessary changes. Item closed. Items of Discussion None. Page 2 Workshop Brainstorming Session Commission members suggested projects that could be of benefit to the city. One project was agreed to have the most impact on the children of the community. Chairman Mark Beauchamp, Tim Turner, and Lt. R.W. Smith will work with the schools to initiate a contest between the campuses for the best Public Service Announcements. Mr. Turner suggested the project and emphasized how getting the children involved would make a more lasting impression on them and the community. The announcements should be safety related and involve the kids putting the projects together. Report to be given at the next meeting. Chairman Beauchamp advised the commission that we now have another tool for the citizens to reach the commission when they have a concern or complaint. The commission will have a page on the City's new web site. Mrs. Bourgoin suggested that the commission spend some time getting to know a little about each other. The commission meets monthly and yet we really don't have the opportunity to get acquainted. Members took turns telling some history about themselves and why they wanted to get involved in the community. When all was said and done, it was quite amazing how much the members found they have in common. It was a learning exercise and helped us recognize the strengths in the different individuals that could benefit the commission and our success. There being no further business before the commission, the meeting was adjourned at 3:12 P.M.
