Library Advisory Board Minutes - 10/18/20111 r LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES t October 18, 2011 MEMBERS PRESENT: MEMBERS ABSENT: Andy Austin Julie Carter Jennifer Andrews Carrie Ann Taylor Arthur Bea Williams Amy Bobrowitz Jean Hall Peggy Browning Donna Jane McGough EX- OFFICIO MEMBERS PRESENT: Annetta Pope, Council Liaison Jack Murphy, Director of Parks &Recreation / OFFICE r Alan Martin, President Friends of the Wichita Falls Public Library D Lesley Daly, Library Administrator A quorum was present and the meeting was called to order at 4:15 pm. Librarian's report: Ms. Daly introduced Alan Martin, the new president of the Friends of the Wichita Falls Public Library. Ms. Daly gave an overview of the part Wichita Falls is playing in the Overdrive consortium which currently comprises 21 North Texas libraries. The consortium is expecting to expand by the end of the calendar year and has shifted its focus over the past three years from purchasing primarily electronic audiobooks to an almost equal acquisition of electronic audio and text books due to the recent boom in the popularity of e- readers. (Statistics presented are attached). Looking at the library's current physical audiobook inventory, there is a ratio of approximately 4:1 with regard to cd:cassette format. There are just over 1,000 cassettes still in the adult, young adult and juvenile collections, over 900 of which were on the shelf as of October 17, 2011. The library will be looking closely at recent circulation activity, but will most likely be weeding the cassettes (particularly those in young adult and youth) within the next quarter. Cassettes have not been purchased for approximately two years. Ms. Daly noted that there have been recent rumors regarding the TexShare card program and its imminent demise, but reassured the board that there is no plan to discontinue this program. TexShare is a reciprocal borrowing agreement between participating Texas libraries that allow patrons to gain direct access to materials not owned by their home library or while traveling across the state. Rules for issuing TexShare cards vary from institution to institution, but the program itself is stable. The library will be holding another `Food for Fines' canned food drive this year from November 5 -19, coinciding with the annual `Hope for the Holidays' sponsored by the Homeless Coalition on November 17 in Room 205. Friends Report: Alan Martin announced that the newly - elected Friends' board will be undertaking a review of current by -laws, looking to add long -term savings as a standard policy and procedure for the organization. He is in the process of updating membership and volunteer rosters and schedules, and hopes that the Friends can increase marketing this coming year to attract more customers and raise community awareness. Old Business: New operating hours came into effect October 1 with both staff and patrons (gradually) adapting accordingly. The State Library is aware of the adjustment and is happy that the library is again in compliance with minimum standards, but WFPL will remain on probationary status until the next annual report submission. Probationary status does not negatively impact the library with regard to applying for and receiving grants, nor to inclusion in State Library events, elections etc. New Business: North Texas Library Partners (North Texas Regional Library System) has announced a new director: Adam Wright recently resigned his position to take a post at Fort Worth Public Library, and Carolyn Davidson Brewer is returning to NTLP having had 9 years experience with the organization from 2002 -2011. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 5:08 pm.
