CITY CLERK'S OFFICE Commission On Human Needs January 17, 2005 Date ,- Minutes of the meeting By _Time �' ._� . .,d Today's meeting is a regularly scheduled meeting of the Human Needs Commission. The meeting was convened in the Log Cabin at Lucy Park. Attendance was as follows: Those in attendance: Absent: Dennis Marquardt(Chair) Brent Walker Katherine Phillips Teresa Ramos Bob Johnston Ingrid Fitzpatrick Stephanie Green Sylvester Shed Charinda Sestak Donna Piper Ronnie Sanders Excused: Staff Liaison: Dave Goodrich 1. Call to Order: Item 1. Mr. Marquardt called the commission to order at 5:55 p.m. 2. Old Business: 3. New Business: Item 1. Floor was open for nominations for secretary and Vice Chair. Ms. Phillips and Ms. Ramos were nominated for the positions. The committee voted and Ms. Phillips was elected as Vice Chair and Ms. Ramos as secretary. Item 2. Ms. Piper introduced Xochitl Pruit, Executive Director from First Step Inc. to present to the committee need for transitional housing in Wichita Falls. Ms. Pruit and Ms. Piper are working together with other non profit agencies to apply for the Homeward Bound Grant. This grant would provide long term housing for homeless individuals and families. The Homeward Bound committee would like to have to support of the city with this endeavor. They invited any interested members who would like to help with this project to attend a meeting on February 3rd at 10:00 am at First Step offices. Commission on Human Needs (continued) Item 3.Committees worked together to set goals for the year. Committees made report to the group. Committee on aging and disabled Goals for the year are: a. Check with local businesses as to sufficient handicapped parking, having access to businesses with appropriate doors, and accessibility to checkout lanes that meet ADA standards. b. Establish a system that would allow the disabled and aging who would require assistance during an emergency evacuation to register with the Fire Department. This would allow these individuals to receive assistance during an evacuation. c. Educate the community of available local resources for the elderly such as Red Door, Senior Zone etc. Committee on Human Needs Goals for the year are: a. Network and work in collaboration with the Homeward Bound committee to bring housing to the city. b. Work on getting a letter of collaboration from the City of Wichita Falls for the Homeward Bound project. c. To be included in the planning stages, gathering, and decision making as to how Homeward Bound grant can benefit the city. Committee on Youth Goals for the year are: a. Create and implement a youth group information project. The goal is to provide information for the youth in our community by placing information at Sikes Mall. Information such as concerts, safe places, drug treatment and other resources that pertain to youths. a � Commission on Human Needs (continued) b. Ask local businesses to donate items which can be raffle as giveaways to those visiting the youth information area. c. Design movie posters as advertisement for the treatment center. d. Continue to find support for a skate park in Wichita Falls. Committee on the Status of Women Goals for the year are: a. Follow up on the use of the cameras that were given to police department. b. Continue to educate community on family violence through yearly seminar. c. Work with Homeward Bound project to help with attainting grant. 4. There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was made and seconded. The motion to adjourn was unanimous. The committee adjourned at 7:48 p.m. 5.
