Commission on Human Needs Minutes - 06/16/2003 _ ' _ RECEIVED IN CITY CLERK'S OFFICE Commission On Human Needs Date O 1 ( 'Q June 16, 2003 By P)C, Time !11)/h Minutes of the meeting Today's meeting is a regularly scheduled meeting of the Human Needs Commission. The meeting was convened in the City of Wichita Falls Council Conference Room. Attendance was as follows: Those in attendance: Absent: Keith Cupples (Chair) Pat Haywood Barbara Peterson Brent Walker Katherine Phillips Jeff Pixler Teresa Ramos Dennis Marquardt Sylvester Shed Excused: David Rippy Debbie Lawson Becky Meadows Staff Liaison: Dave Goodrich • l. Call to Order: Item 1. Mr. Cupples called the commission to order at 5:06pm. The minutes of the May 19, 2003 meeting were approved with the following changes: Dennis Marquardt was noted as absent and excused. Human Needs Committee: Ms. Caroline Gregoire is co chaired of Operation Crackdown along with Mr. Al Brown. 2. Old Business: Item 1. Committee on Aging: no report Item 2. Committee on the Disabled: no report Item 3. Committee on the Status of Women: Ms. Ramos reported that the October seminar on family violence is still planned. Ms. Ramos asked the committee for names of people that would like to sit on a community panel to address children and parent violence. Ms. Phillips suggested Ms. Jeffries, from the Treatment Center would be good for the panel. The seminar will take place at Region 9 on October 24. Commission on Human Needs (continued) Item 4. Human Needs Committee: Ms. Phillips stated that Operation Crackdown is doing well. Meetings have been well attended, and have been getting great press from the media, both TV and newspaper. Ms. Phillips provided the commission with the minutes from the June 10 meeting of Operation Crackdown. The next meeting will be July 8, 2003 at 7:00 pm Eastside Girls and Boys Club. Mr. Shed shared with the commission that he will be speaking with a lady who stated that her business was torn down by the city without any reason. Mr. Shed will meet with the lady and get the story from her. Mr. Shed would like to bring this matter to the commission. Mr. Cupples stated that the commission may not be the appropriate place to bring this matter to, but will be willing to be an ear to listen. Mr. Goodrich stated that if Mr. Shed could speak with the lady and the all the information from her, they could go to code enforcement office and find out why the city took it over. Item 5. Committee on Youth: A meeting will be schedule with the Superintendent of Wichita Falls, Mr. Cupples does not know a date at this time, but stated that a meeting would be schedule. 3. New Business: Item 1. Mr. Cupples referred to the By- laws of the commission to help Mr. Shed with the matter of the torn down property. Item 2 Ms. Peterson asked if anything has been heard the assistance the Mayor discussed in the last meeting. Ms. Goodrich stated that they are waiting on the budget process before anything can be decided. 4. There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was made and seconded. The motion to adjourn was unanimous. The committee adjourned at 5:40. 5. The next meeting will be held July 21, 2003 at 5:00pm in the City Council Conference Room.
