The meeting was convened in the City of Wichita Falls Council Conference Room. Attendance was as follows: Those in attendance: City Staff: Keith Cupples (Chair) Dave Goodrich Debbie Lawson Dennis Marquardt Absent: Barbara Peterson Diane Garcia Katherine Phillips Bobby Hall Sylvesta Shed Jeff Pixler David Rippy Teresa Ramos Julia Simon Trevor Simon Excused: Pat Haywood Becky Meadows Brent Walker 1. Call to Order: Item 1. Mr. Cupples called the commission to order at 5:13 p.m. The February 17, 2002 minutes were approved without exception. The following items were discussed: 2. Old Business: a. Committee Reports: Item 1. Committee on Aging: Mr. Rippy informed the Commission that he had obtained a copy of the United Way Needs Assessment Report for use by the Committee on Aging. Item 2. Committee on the Disabled: The Committee on the Disabled and the North Central Human Resource Association was held on March 11, 2003. Approximately fifty human relations personnel from the Wichita Falls area were in attendance. Commission on Human Needs(continued) Item 3. Committee on the Status of Women: The Committee is pursuing their activities to gain support from area attorneys to donate Pro Bono legal services for battered spouses who cannot obtain the legal services of the West Texas Legal Service is unable to assist a victim of domestic violence due to a conflict of interest. Mr. Cupples indicated that he would accept a letter from the Committee for his signature to the City Council regarding this effort. Item 4. Human Needs Committee: Will continue working with the Committee on the Status of Women. Item 5. Committee on Youth: Mr. Cupples indicated that no formal action had transpired although he had informally approached several Board of Education members who were supportive of the Commission's initiative. The Committee will be approaching the Wichita Falls Independent School District Superintendent of Schools to explain their aims and to gain his approval for their involvement. 3. New Business: Item 1. Katherine Phillips was elected as Co-Chair of the Human Relations Committee. Item 2. Ms. Phillips invited the Commission members to a meeting at 2:00 p.m. on March 27, 2003 at the Eastside Girls and Boys Club on Sullivan Street. This meeting is a community meeting to discuss ways in which the community can eliminate illegal activities that are openly taking place and that are endangering the children who are in the neighborhood. Item 3. Ms. Phillips reported that that portion of the City's Web Page that concerns the Commission on Human Needs is not current. The Staff Liaison was asked to correct that situation. 4. There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was made and seconded. The motion to adjourn was unanimous. The committee adjourned at 5:54 p.m. 5.
