The meeting convened in the City of Wichita Falls Council Conference room. Presents Staff Liaisons Keith Cupples Dave Goodrich Kay Geurin J. D. Call to Order: Item 1. Ms Penny Miller called the commission to order at 5: 00 p.m. The minutes of the May 21, 2001, meeting were reviewed and approved without correction. The following items were discussed: 2 . Old Business: Item 1 . Committee on Aging - This committee chairperson made a verbal request additional committee members . Kay Geurin reported that her committee currently identifying and contacting agencies that work specifically with senior citizens and plan to invite them to attend a joint meeting to discuss issues of senior citizens . 4 Commission on Human Needs (continued) Item 2 . Committee on Disabilities -Mr. Jamar submitted information-listing resources for the disabled to the City' s Web Page Manager. Each committee chairperson agreed to provide the following information via E-mail to Mr. Jamar for compilation and possible inclusion on the City' s Web Page: a. Current Committee Goals, Present Committee Accomplishments, and benefits gained. b. Current Events and Endeavors (Brief Summary) Include, "What, When, Where and Who (telephone number and name of person to contact. ) Item 3 . Committee on Human Relations - Efforts are still being made to start study groups and solicit support from other outside agencies. The committee' s chairperson recently resigned due to work related commitments. MS Penny Miller will assist in locating additional committee members. Item 4 . Committee on the Status of Women -Committee members are still working to resolve issues involving domestic violence. Rita Vokes said her committee met and had a productive meeting on the 12th of September. She announced a free seminar on domestic violence that' s scheduled for the 20th of Mar 2002 . She said identifying domestic abuse by emergency and acute caregivers is the focus of the seminar. Also she said, police and general caregivers will be invited to attend this seminar. She will request donations of snacks for seminar participants . 4 . New Business: a. Penny Miller will address committee personnel shortages . Several committee members have missed more than three meetings without prior notification or excuse. Two members recently resigned. Mr. Goodrich requested Commission members to assist in finding new Commission members . Commission on Human Needs (continued) b. The United Way' s Needs Assessment Survey of the Wichita Falls is completed. MS Miller expects to be able to provide a brief summary of the survey at the next Commission meeting. c. Guest Speaker: MS Jenna Lewis from the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from Fort Worth Texas, provided the following information: Commission on Human Needs (continued) Grants are grants available for Section 8 housing. Grant money is not being use in many communities because of the lack of public awareness and knowledge. She requested Commission' s members help her in getting the grant information out to the public. Her telephone number is 817-978-5972 . She said her office is the point of contact for complaints concerning housing discrimination and grants . 5 . There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was made and seconded. The motion to adjourn was unanimously. The committee adjourned at 6: 10 p.m. 6.
