Mr. Poteet opened the meeting at 3:10 p.m. Mr. Clark introduced Mr. Rich Shirey as the new
Building Code Administrator.
Mr. Shirey talked about the changes needed in insurance and bonding of contractors. He handed
out copies of the proposed changes and read them. One of the proposed changes would be to
separate the bond for Residential Light Commercial from the General Contractor. To lower the
bond amount for Residential Light Commercial to $50,000, reduce the General Liability from
$250,000 to $200,000. Another type of bond would be added which would be Residential Light
Commercial Remodel Under $50,000. This would be a $25,000 bond and $300,000 general
liability. Mr. Shirey also talked about testing for new contractors. There would be commercial
and residential tests for licensing. Holders of current valid licenses would be exempt from
testing.
Other changes were discussed. A licensed contractor will be required to take out permits for
repairs or new construction on commercial properties.
Mr. Shirey discussed the fine for violating licensing ordinance.
John Ferguson made a motion to table any decision until the next meeting. The motion was
seconded by Jackie Lebow and passed unanimously.
A public meeting was set for Wednesday, December 6, 2000 in Room 500 at 3:00 p.m. for
further discussion and to give contractors an opportunity to voice their opinions.
The meeting was adjourned at 4:59 p.m.
