Guest Speaker: Mary Lou Wright, of Path Project (Partners Resource Network, Inc. ) , was the guest speaker. PATH provides services across the state to parents of infants, toddlers, children and youth with disabilities. These services include training, information, referral, resources, consultation and emotional support to parents. The state office is located in Beaumont. Wichita Falls is the location of a regional office. PATH offers workshops in parenting a child with special needs, educational rights, parenting/professional partnerships and record keeping and case management; information on disabilities and challenging needs and available services; assistance in preparing for ARD and IEP meetings, organizing a parent support group; resources such as quarterly newsletter, publications computerized information system; and events such as parent leadership training and regional conferences. Ms. Wright asked the Commission for assistants in helping PATH reach more minority parents with children who have disabilities. The Commission suggested that Ms. Wright prepare an article on PATH which could be included in the Commission' s quarterly newsletter. The Commission also suggested several organizations which might be able to provide' referrals to PATH with emphasis on reaching minority parents. Old BUSINESS: A. Status of Women: 1. Rita Vokes reported that the survey concerning the needs of parents and youths needs assessment is in the final stages of preparation. This needs assessment is to identify methods to reduce teenage pregnancy by providing information to parents and teenagers. Commission on Human Needs (continued) B. Committee on Disabilities: 1. Don Carter reported that he had talked to Mr. Warren Silver about presenting a "Silver Report" on the Operation Safe Return Program. Mr. Carter reported that he has not yet had a formal meeting on with Mr. Silver but hopes to do so in the near future. C. Committee on Human Relations: 1. No report. 2. Penny Miller commented that she had sent a e-mail to Carroll Wilson, Times Record News, asking if the Times Record News would be a sponsor of a Study Circle. She had not had a response from Mr. Wilson at the time of the Commission meeting. (NOTE: After the meeting concluded, Ms. Miller reported that Mr. Wilson agreed to be a sponsor of a Study Circle. ) D. Committee on Aging: No report. E. Sub-Committee on the Media: No report. NEW BUSINESS. A. Ms. Miller asked each committee to review the goals of their committee that were established a year ago and be prepared to report on the status of the various committees in attaining those goals. There being no further business, a motion to adjourn was made by Ms. yokes and seconded by Ms. Phillips. The motion passed unanimously. The Commission adjourned at 7:33 a.m. The next regular meeting of the Commission will be held at 7 :00 a.m. on November 15, 1999, in the City Council Conference Room.
