Williams Eastside Revitalization Committee Thursday, February 10, 1994 City Staff: David Clark Richard Luedke The meeting was called to order at 12:10 p.m. by Secretary Brenda Jarrett. Minutes were read by Mr. Luedke. A motion was made by Mr. Welburn and seconded by Mr. Polk to approve the minutes. Motion carried. Discussion began with the question of how to get more residents involved in ongoing projects in Eastside. Issues discussed included beautification, expansion of TIF zones, tax abatement, and utilization of Enterprise zone designation. The group agreed that targets of action should be established and campaigns should be launched to bring pride to Eastside. The Committee agreed to advertise for a volunteer coordinator to utilize community resources to bring about change in Eastside. The Committee seeks to a find an individual who knows the Eastside community well, who could work well with the city government, who is self -motivated, and who has time available to carry out this charge. A press release will be made to advertise this position. The Committee agreed that various housing opportunities should be explored in Eastside such as the participation in the paint program and the aggregation of small vacant lots into larger lots to attract housing development. An important issue discussed was the image of Eastside. Efforts that will improve the improve Eastside's image include: beautification efforts, crime prevention, and establishment of drug free and gun free zones. Another Committee recommendation was to approach area churches to consider adoption of a squadron at Sheppard Air Force Base. The Committee agreed that the major issues discussed in this meeting should be the focus of the next meeting to be held on Thursday, February 24, 1994 at 5:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Center. The meeting adjourned at 1:3 5 p.m.
