Ordinance determining the continued placement of the Sons of our
Southland memorial monument on the grounds of the Memorial
Auditorium
WHEREAS, the W.R. Scurry Chapter No. 1448 of the United Daughters of the
Confederacy raised a historical marker "In memory of the Sons of our Southland 1861-
1865;" and,
WHEREAS, said obelisk monument, a photogran, - which is attached as Exhibit
A, was placed on the grounds of the Memorial Audit(-Y. f in 1934; and,
WHEREAS, memorials such as these th 'ionor the confederacy have become
highly politicized; and,
WHEREAS, the City Council has dP.. -,.fined that it is in the best interests of the
safety, health and well-being of the ouL � -ind property to deliberate possible actions
regarding the continued placement of , _i,_morial on public grounds.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ,,')AINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS, TH,T
(1) The Sons of our Southland memorial located on the grounds of the Memorial
Auditorium shall be left to occupy its current location with no modifications.
(2) The Sons of our Southland memorial shall hereby be removed from the
grounds of the Memorial Auditorium and relocated to a museum or to storage
until such time as a location deemed appropriate for such memorial is found.
(3) The Sons of our Southland memorial shall be left to occupy its current location
on the grounds of the Memorial Auditorium, but shall be rededicated by the
placement of a plaque over the current wording in order to honor all the
soldiers who fought during the Civil War.
(4) The future of the placement of the Sons of our Southland memorial shall be
put to the voters during the election of November 3, 2020.
