Library Advisory Board Minutes - 04/17/2018LIBRARY ADVISORY BOARD MINUTES April 17, 2018 MEMBERS PRESENT: Kim Acuna Amy Bobrowitz Kimberley Latham Jim Sernoe Carolyn Watt -Sutherland Jana Hausburg, Library Administrator Jim Dockery, Deputy City Manager Bobby Whiteley, Council Liaison MEMBERS ABSENT Suhua Huang Roylene Quintero Emily Reeves Kay Story Minutes were approved. Ms. Hausburg informed the group that she is currently working on the budget for the next Fiscal Year. Mr. Dockery gave some background information on the City's change in budgeting software to Tyler Technologies as current budgeting software has become outdated. The Finance piece will go live in October. The Payroll piece will go live in January of 2019. Librarian's report Ms. Hausburg shared an infographic she'd put together with data gathered while doing the Texas Public Libraries Annual Report. The board expressed pleasure with the format and asked that it be shared electronically. Staff have selected a raccoon to serve as the library's mascot. Artist Audra Lambert will be sharing her ideas for mascot and mural design next week. Ms. Hausburg reported that the new Assistant Library Administrator, Angela Hill, will begin on April 30th. Ms. Hill comes from an 11 -year stint at the Metropolitan Library System in Oklahoma City. Her skills and experience mean she will need very little training and staff is looking forward to having her onboard. In addition, a hiring committee selected internal candidate Crystal Land from a healthy pool of applicants to be our new Librarian I. She will take over her new role on Monday, April 23rd Ms. Hausburg plans to submit the job description for the vacated Library Assistant position to HR in the morning so that the library can once again be fully staffed. Ms. Watt -Sutherland highlighted a library program taking place on May 1. Local author Lynn Hoggard will appear at both reading clubs (Chapter Chat, 10 a.m.; and Between the Lines, 6:45 p.m.) to discuss her books: Motherland: Stories and Poems of Louisiana, and, Bushwhacking home: and other poems. She encouraged board members to attend. Ms. Hausburg then promoted two upcoming programs: Neighborhood Economics Forum: Economic Prognosis (Tues., April 24 at 6:30 p.m.) and NetGallery Reviews, Sat., April 21, 11 am-12:30pm). The board was not comfortable with making a decision without having all board members present. Ms. Hausburg said she would poll members by email and the final decision could be made at the May meeting. Ms. Hausburg mentioned a weeding project that is currently taking place. There was some discussion about the process for disposing of withdrawn books and the role that the Friends of the Library play. The board was interested in how other similar -sized library systems dispose of their withdrawn books. Ms. Hausburg said she would do some research and report at next month's meeting.
